By capacity
Robot mowers by lawn size
Rated mowing area is the first spec to check and the easiest one to get wrong. A mower rated for a quarter acre does not cut a quarter acre in one session - it means that is the area it can keep on top of over its weekly schedule.

What a quarter, a half and a full acre actually look like
Most people overestimate their lawn. Before you filter by rated area, it helps to see what these figures mean on the ground.
Measure the grass only. Driveways, beds and the house footprint do not count towards the rated area.

A dash means the manufacturer does not publish that figure. We leave it blank rather than guess. Affiliate link pending means we have not been approved by that brand yet.

What rated area actually means
Manufacturers publish a maximum mowing area, usually in square meters and often converted to acres. That figure is not how much grass the mower cuts before the battery dies. It is the total area the model is designed to keep at a consistent height across a normal week, returning to its dock to recharge as often as it needs to.
- Buying close to the ceiling leaves no margin. If your lawn measures 0.7 acres, a model rated for 0.75 acres will be working at its limit every week - and a wet spring, when the grass grows fastest, is exactly when you need headroom.
- Only the grass counts. Driveways, patios, beds and the footprint of the house are not part of the area the mower has to cover.
Getting a usable measurement
- County property records. Most US counties publish lot size online. Subtract the built footprint and hard landscaping.
- Satellite measuring tools. Any free map tool with an area function gets you within a useful margin in a few minutes.
- Pacing it out. For a simple rectangular lawn, length times width in feet, divided by 43,560, gives acres.
Round up, not down. An over-specified mower simply finishes sooner; an under-specified one never catches up.
