Slope is where robot mowers most often fail their owners. Manufacturers publish a maximum gradient as a percentage - a 45% slope rises 45 feet over 100 feet of run, which is far steeper than most people picture.

What actually decides slope performance
The published gradient is the headline number, but three other things decide whether a mower copes with your bank in practice.
Rated gradient, at the steepest point
Measure your worst section, not the average across the lawn. One short steep stretch is enough to strand a mower that is rated below it.
Drive and tire design
Wheel size, tread and whether the model is all-wheel drive matter as much as the quoted percentage, especially on wet grass.
Approach angle to the slope
Many models manage a gradient going straight up but not traversing across it. Check how the manufacturer words the rating.

What a 45% slope actually looks like
Every manufacturer rates slope as a percentage, and almost every buyer reads it as degrees. They are not the same, and the gap is where returns come from.

A rated maximum is a manufacturer claim about ideal conditions. Wet grass, leaf litter and loose soil all reduce real-world grip.
Reading a slope rating
Slope ratings are published as a percentage: the rise divided by the horizontal run. A 30% slope rises 30 feet over 100 feet of run. A 45% slope rises 45 feet over the same distance. Percentages are not degrees, and the gap between the two trips up a lot of buyers - 45% is about 24 degrees, considerably steeper than most people picture.
Three things the percentage does not tell you
- Direction of travel. Some models manage a gradient driving straight up but not traversing across it. Check how the manufacturer words the rating - "maximum slope" and "maximum working gradient" are not always the same claim.
- Surface conditions. Published figures assume dry, established turf. Wet grass, moss, leaf litter and loose or sandy soil all reduce grip, sometimes sharply.
- Slope at the boundary. A mower that handles the face of a bank may still struggle to turn safely at the top or bottom edge, especially near a wall or fence.
What to do before you buy
- Find your steepest section and measure it, rather than estimating the lawn's average.
- Choose a model rated comfortably above that figure, not exactly at it.
- Check whether the manufacturer sells wheel or tire upgrades for slope work, and whether fitting one affects the warranty.
- Confirm what the model does when it loses traction - retry, reroute, or report an error and stop.
Steep ground is the most common reason a robot mower disappoints its owner. It is worth being conservative here.
