Wire-free mowers replace the buried perimeter wire with satellite RTK, onboard cameras, LiDAR, or a mix of those. This page explains what each approach needs from your yard before it works properly.
The trade-off, honestly
Wire-free is easier to set up, not unconditionally better
Skipping the wire removes the worst part of owning a robot mower. It also moves the failure mode: instead of a cut wire you now have positioning that depends on sky view, light, or reflective surfaces. Neither is a dealbreaker - but you should choose the navigation type that suits your yard rather than the one with the longest feature list.
What wire-free gets you

What to check first
- RTK needs a clear sky view for its reference antenna - roof or open pole mount.
- Camera systems can struggle in low light, deep shade or heavy rain.
- Narrow side passages under 3 feet defeat many models regardless of navigation type.

What replaced the wire
A traditional robot mower needs a perimeter wire pegged or buried around every edge of the lawn and around every bed, tree and obstacle. Installing it is the single most disliked part of owning one, and a cut wire is a common failure a season or two later.
Wire-free models replace that wire with onboard positioning. You define the mowing area once, usually by walking the mower around the boundary or drawing it on a map in the app. There are three main approaches, and they suit different yards.
RTK-GNSS satellite positioning
A fixed reference antenna, mounted on a roof or a pole, corrects the satellite signal to centimeter-level accuracy. Precise and well proven in open yards. The requirement is a genuinely clear view of the sky for the antenna - a heavily wooded lot, a narrow site between tall buildings, or a deep valley position can all degrade it.
Camera and vision systems
Onboard cameras read the lawn edge, obstacles and surroundings. Because they do not depend on satellites, they generally cope better under tree cover. They do depend on adequate light and on visual contrast between the grass and its border, so very low light, deep shade or heavy rain can reduce reliability.
LiDAR
A laser scanner builds a three-dimensional map of the space. Strong in complex, enclosed or shaded yards where neither satellites nor cameras are ideal. It is typically found on higher-priced models.
Hybrids
Several manufacturers now combine approaches - satellite positioning for the broad map, cameras or LiDAR for obstacle avoidance and for the sections where the satellite fix weakens. If your yard has both open lawn and a shaded corner, a hybrid is often the sensible answer.
What still trips up every wire-free mower
- Passages narrower than roughly three feet.
- Steps, sharp drops and unfenced water.
- Gradients above the model's published rating.
- Lawns split across levels with no gentle route between them.
Going wire-free removes the installation problem. It does not remove the need to check the model against your own ground.
