Why go wire-free?

A traditional robot mower needs a perimeter wire pegged or buried around every edge and every flower bed. Wire-free models replace that with satellite, camera or LiDAR positioning, so you map the yard from an app instead of digging a trench. It is a real convenience gain - and it comes with real conditions you should know about before you spend the money.

The part nobody explains

How a wire-free mower knows where your lawn ends

Three different technologies solve the same problem, and the right one for you depends on your yard, not on the price. This is the single decision that most often gets made wrong.

Boundary wire

A cable is pegged or buried around every edge and every flower bed. Reliable, but you dig once and you repair it whenever an edger finds it.

RTK satellite

A fixed antenna corrects the satellite signal to centimetre accuracy, so the mower cuts in straight lines. It needs that antenna to see open sky.

Camera vision

Cameras read where grass stops and path, bed or fence begins. No base station to site, but it wants decent light and a visible edge.

Wire-free means the second or the third. Neither is better in the abstract: RTK wants open sky, vision wants a clear grass edge.

Tree cover blocks satellites. Narrow side passages confuse cameras. Check your own yard against the method before you check the price.

We are a research and comparison site. We do not run a test lawn, and we will not pretend we do - here is exactly what our comparisons are based on.

  2. Normalize the specs

    We convert areas, slopes and runtimes into the same units so models can genuinely be compared line by line.

  3. Weigh the real constraints

    Navigation type, rated slope, warranty length and US support footprint carry more weight than headline features.

  4. Re-check and date it

    Prices move. Every model carries the date we last verified it, so you always know how fresh the figure is.

We do not test these machines and we never pretend to. What we do is read the manufacturer's own published data, record it with the date, and show you the date next to the number.

Do wire-free robot mowers really work without a perimeter wire?

Yes. Instead of a buried wire they position themselves with satellite RTK, onboard cameras, LiDAR, or a combination of those. You draw the mowing boundary once in the app. The trade-off is that each technology has its own environmental requirements, which is exactly what our comparisons focus on.

How do I know which mower fits my lawn?

Start with two numbers: your total lawn area and the gradient of your steepest section. Those two rule out most of the market immediately. Our lawn-size selector and slope filter do that first pass for you.

Do you sell the mowers?

No. We do not hold stock, take payment or ship anything. Every buy button sends you to the manufacturer, who handles the sale, delivery, warranty and returns directly.

How do you make money?

Will a wire-free mower work under heavy tree cover?

It depends entirely on the navigation technology. Satellite RTK systems need a clear view of the sky for their reference station and can lose position under a dense canopy. Camera and LiDAR systems are generally less sky-dependent. This is the single most common reason a mower disappoints its owner, so we list navigation type on every model.
